Innovative Breast Cancer Test Featured on Dr. Oz Show
May 5 -The availability of Breast Specific Gamma Imaging/Molecular Breast Imaging (BSGI/MBI) is exciting news for women, and viewers of TV’s Dr. Oz show who learned more about the technology on Thurs. May 5 when the popular program host presented “Cancer Detectives: Unlocking the Cure for Our Biggest Health Mystery.” The show broadcast at 12:30 p.m. on NBC/WPXI-TV and is scheduled for 10 p.m. on PCNC.
The innovative BSGI/MBI technology captured local attention in 2007 when Weinstein Imaging Associates, a leading ultrasound and breast imaging facility in Western Pennsylvania, introduced the Greater Pittsburgh tri-state region to this diagnostic procedure that helps to detect breast cancers and evaluate areas of concern on mammogram, ultrasound and physical examinations.
►Weinstein Imaging Associates remains the only regional center to offer the test.
►Physicians from WIA recently presented positive data concerning BSGI/MBI to the Radiological Society of North America and National Institutes of Health.
Since implementing BSGI in May 2007, Weinstein Imaging Associates has used the new technology to perform more than 1,100 tests and has been able to detect additional cancers not seen on mammography or the initial ultrasound. They also found that BSGI/MBI contributed significantly to improvements in patient care. BSGI/MBI detected breast cancer in 12 of 95 patients or 12.6 percent who had a negative or indeterminate mammogram and normal ultrasound with unresolved clinical concern.
